Why is a LinkedIn profile needed?

LinkedIn is one of our favourite ways to look for work and can make your job search easier. It used to be that you went door to door and looked for a job and this is no longer the case. In the past you could pick up the phone and call an employer but with the days of texting, email and voicemail that is a much greater challenge. We call LinkedIn business cards on steroids. With 400 million registered users, LinkedIn allows you to leverage the power of your network – the people you know, and the people those people know – to help you connect to the person (or people) who are in a position to offer you a job. You need a solid LinkedIn branding page because employers and recruiters regularly source people through LinkedIn and vet job candidates or evaluate a job seeker’s value. You want to ensure your profile is strong and on-brand.

What is the purpose of using twitter for job search? Is it useful?

It is becoming more apparent that LinkedIn isn’t the only place to make lasting professional connections online. Some people predict that Twitter will be the social network for making professional connections in the near future and with 236 million active users (April 2015) it is more than a reasonable prediction.

Similarly to LinkedIn, Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to share information, connect with individuals, and follow organizations to receive up-to-date company information and job postings. Unlike LinkedIn, any information that is shared, or “tweeted”, can only be 140 characters long and you can follow anyone, rather than having to be accepted as a connection.

Job seekers should follow companies that they want to work for and people who work for those companies. Twitter is less formal than LinkedIn so you can reply to, favourite or re-tweet (share) individual’s tweets more readily than you would do on LinkedIn (while still maintaining a professional image). There are also numerous job-search Twitter accounts that you can follow to receive immediate notifications of new postings.

What is the difference between a CV, Bio and a Résumé?

A CV (curriculum vitae) is primarily used to apply for academic, education, research, or scientific roles and often lists publications that you have written. A bio is often required by individuals who are consultants and is often used in proposals, as information provided during an introduction when public speaking or for entrepreneurs seeking financing. A résumé is a succinct and targeted marketing tool used to secure industry employment.

What is the value of a well-written résumé and cover letter?

A well written résumé and cover letter are only one part of your job search but a very important part of the journey. The average recruiter spends 7 seconds reviewing the résumé and deciding if they are going to move you forward to the interview. Your résumé needs to stand out. A professional resume tailored to fit the specific job you are looking for and presents you in the best possible light. Having a résumé created that is targeted and focused can help you find work faster. Employers are overwhelmed with job applications; you need to make yours stand out.

Is it okay to lie on your résumé?

Pretty simple: the answer is no! It is a small world and you can get caught.

What is ATS Applicant Tracking System?

ATS stands for Automated Tracking System, which is an electronic application system that many employers, both large and small, use to accept and screen job candidates. If you apply for a job online there is a good chance that your resume will be going through ATS. Resumes submitted through these systems are stripped down and scanned for keywords that match available job openings. See my blog post for further information on how ATS systems work and to ensure you use the right resume when applying to online postings.

Can you guarantee that I will get a job by using your service?

Our service is focussed on providing you with career documents that will increase your chances of success however, similarly to all other honest resume writing services, we cannot guarantee that you will secure a job offer. Securing an offer relies on numerous variables including the current economic climate, the relevance of your experience and the individual hiring manager’s preferences, to name only a few.

Why do you sometimes have a wait list for assistance?

Our clients receive unique, strategic career documents that are prepared on an individual basis; we do not use templates or simply type up generic resumes. With a focus on quality, this can occasionally mean that we will be unable to provide immediate assistance. The anticipated turnaround time for your document(s) will be discussed during our initial conversation. If there is an urgency for your resume certainly let us know; accelerated service is available at an additional cost – subject to availability.
