Employer Build for the Future Timelines

FutureWorks is conducting a pilot project* in partnership with New Media BC, Life Sciences BC and BCTIA to identify the human resource challenges hindering growth specifically within small businesses of less than 35 employees in British Columbia’s new and emerging industries.

Phase One: Research: Learn from the Experts
(October 2009 - March 2010)

Build for the Future project staff will meet with entrepreneurs, HR experts, associations, educational institutions, researchers, funders both government and private sector, to identify the factors from a human resources perspective that are essential for success in rapidly growing companies.

Phase Two: Best Practices Models: Identified and Tested
(March 2010 - August 2010)

A series of best practices models will be developed based on the research findings, which would then be tested in ten growing companies in the new and emerging industries.  HR consultants, who have previous experience in successfully assisting companies in growth mode, will meet with the ten companies individually and:

• interview, analyze, and report on current structures in place
• identify strengths and weaknesses
• provide a template for greater efficiency and productivity
• meet with key managers to enlist buy-in on implementation
• document findings and interpret results

Phase Three: Sharing the Knowledge:  Workshops
(September 2010)

The results of the pilot project will be presented at a series of workshops that will share HR tips and tools with other companies in growth mode and provide participants with a roadmap to assist them in their growth.
